What is a Ladoum sheep?

The Ladoum is a prestige short-haired sheep breed raised in Senegal and Mauritania, remarkable for its very large size: top rams exceed 110 cm at the withers and 150 kg. It is bred for beauty, shows and reproduction, not for meat.

Recognisable by its tall stretched silhouette, convex profile and spiral horns, the Ladoum takes its name from the Ladem Berber tribe, herders of the southern Sahara. Its modern cradle is the city of Thiès, where Senegalese selection began in the 1970s.

It is today one of the most expensive sheep in the world — a national cultural and economic phenomenon in Senegal, celebrated by the international press.
